Summary

11 hours, 14 minutes

New York Times bestselling author Lorraine Heath begins a compelling new spin-off series, The Chessmen: Masters of Seduction, centering around three heroes--Knight, Bishop, and Rook--who play to win at any cost。

Born into an aristocratic family, yearning for a life beyond Society's strictures, Marguerite "Daisy" Townsend is an enterprising sleuth。 Hired to obtain proof of a wife's infidelity, she secures a position in the household of the woman's lover, never expecting to be lured into the seductive blackguard's arms herself。

Devilishly handsome, David Blackwood, known widely as Bishop, quickly realizes the enticing maid is interested in far more than dusting。 She aims to uncover his sins。 Although tempted by the dangerous beauty, he can't risk her learning the truth: his affairs are chaste。 As a boy who witnessed his mother's abusive relationship, Bishop now helps desperate wives escape unhappy marriages。

Yet when he is accused of murdering the husband of a "paramour," he is forced to seek Daisy's assistance in proving his innocence。 As their perilous search draws them into a web of deceits, they can no longer deny their simmering desire。 Once secrets are revealed, will Daisy's counterfeit scoundrel give up the scandalous games he plays and surrender his heart into her keeping?

While I have several books by Lorraine Heath on my shelf, I have never actually read a book by her, so this was my first one。 Lorraine Heath is a very good writer。 I enjoyed this story so much, and her writing pulled me in。 I loved both Bishop and Daisy's characters as well as found the plot to be intriguing。 Bishop is widely known as a rake。 He has broken up several marriages and is known to have a rotating set of woman in his bedroom every night。 But he has a secret: he never actually sleeps w While I have several books by Lorraine Heath on my shelf, I have never actually read a book by her, so this was my first one。 Lorraine Heath is a very good writer。 I enjoyed this story so much, and her writing pulled me in。 I loved both Bishop and Daisy's characters as well as found the plot to be intriguing。 Bishop is widely known as a rake。 He has broken up several marriages and is known to have a rotating set of woman in his bedroom every night。 But he has a secret: he never actually sleeps with them。 He is just helping them get out of their unhappy marriages。 Daisy has been hired by one of the husbands whose wife is visiting Bishop's bedchamber to uncover if his wife is really having an affair。 From the moment Bishop lays eyes on Daisy pouring tea, they were instantly attracted to each other。 As they get to know each other more, they grow closer, but still try to fight their attraction。 As always, I went into this book blind, so I wasn't expecting the plot of this book at all。 The first half of the book focused on Daisy trying to find out if her client's wife was having an affair。 Then about 50% into the story, it became a murder mystery。 To be honest, I'm not really sure if I loved the murder mystery aspect or not。 It was fairly quick because it was only part of the books focus。 While it was shocking to discover who the murderer was, I still thought it needed more buildup or to be the main focus of the book。 But I overall did like the plot of the story。For a book that talks about needing to be honest with each other to make a relationship work, I just wanted the author to acknowledge the fact that these two characters were lying to each other for half the book about who they really were。 Daisy wasn't actually a servant, even though she lead Bishop to believe that。 And Bishop was not actually a Rake, even though he was putting on a performance whenever she walked into the room。 Lying about who you are is one of my least favorite tropes, just because I don't really like lying, but I did like this book overall and would recommend it。I received this book for free via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

A great readI enjoyed reading about Bishop and Daisy, how they met to how they fell in love。 He was a man who didn't care for men who abused their wives so he helped them get divorces。 She was a female investigator and she was hired by one of the husbands to find out if his wife was being unfaithful, they felt an attraction for each other。 There were a few areas that were very emotional and scary。 I highly recommend this book! 👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤ A great readI enjoyed reading about Bishop and Daisy, how they met to how they fell in love。 He was a man who didn't care for men who abused their wives so he helped them get divorces。 She was a female investigator and she was hired by one of the husbands to find out if his wife was being unfaithful, they felt an attraction for each other。 There were a few areas that were very emotional and scary。 I highly recommend this book! 👍👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤❤ 。。。more

Standard m/f romances left me cold for a long time。 Reading various ugly behaviors by the fictional men and pallid submission on the part of the women made me bang my head on the table。 But, occasionally, a romance novel comes along that temporarily renews my original fondness for the genre。This is one such novel。 Two unconventional people—the pretend rake of the title and the independent female detective sent to snoop on him—come to a gradual understanding of one another。 David Blackwood (calle Standard m/f romances left me cold for a long time。 Reading various ugly behaviors by the fictional men and pallid submission on the part of the women made me bang my head on the table。 But, occasionally, a romance novel comes along that temporarily renews my original fondness for the genre。This is one such novel。 Two unconventional people—the pretend rake of the title and the independent female detective sent to snoop on him—come to a gradual understanding of one another。 David Blackwood (called “Bishop” by his clients) has a fierce protective drive to help women。 But he’s not a caped crusader roaming the streets of England。 He runs an unusual business in which he helps unhappy wives divorce their husbands。Marguerite Townsend also wishes to help others。 She puts her keen observational skills and sharp mind toward solving cases for her clients。 Being a woman in a patriarchal society gives her distinct advantages: she’s overlooked, unsuspected and nearly invisible as she gathers her evidence。 She’s very successful, too, deducing a client of framing Bishop before he even thinks of her as a suspect。 Both are laboring under a system that greatly favors men and both of them chafe, in their unique ways, at its constraints。 Both Marguerite and David have eschewed marriage because they’ve seen how unhappy it makes the married couples。 Both have dark backstories that have led them to choose their outré lifestyles and fueled their determination never to place their necks in the marital noose。They are wonderful characters, occasionally funny with whip-smart dialogue that probes the political, social and financial morals and mores of the times。 The author has even included an afterword that shines a spotlight on the factual history that lends weight to her story。 Did I mention the sex? The UST is smoldering between them from early on but Marguerite and David don’t start heating the sheets until past the midway point of the book。 It’s well waiting for because this is hot stuff。 Marguerite may be a virgin but she’s got no problem taking charge in bed。 But I’ll let you read that part for yourself。The murder mystery was a welcome addition although the main culprit wasn’t a surprise。 In fact, I put together the entire scenario of motive and murderer long before the truth was revealed and I almost never do that in a mystery novel。 But it’s the character development, romance, sex and conversation that lift this novel out of the ordinary。 This is a novel that titillates, surprises, amuses and seduces。 For the determined romance reader or the skeptic, this novel is the real deal。 。。。more

I was really excited for this book but somehow it just didn’t live up to my expectations。 I found the pacing off, the first half felt a bit slow and repetitive and the end contained an unexpected and frankly, unnecessary twist。 I did like the 2 MCs and but I felt like the love story just needed more than was there on the page。

The Counterfeit Scoundrel is the first book in Lorraine Heath's new historical romance series The Chessmen: Masters of Seduction。 It's a spin-off from her title The Duchess Hunt, in which the Chessmen were introduced。 As that is one of my favorite books ever, I was very excited to get to know Bishop, Knight and Rook。 It started off a bit slow for me, but I stuck with it, and I am so glad I did! It became the wonderful and exciting romance I have come to expect from Ms。 Heath。Though she's a member of an aristocratic family, Marguerite "Daisy" Townsend wanted to do more than attend balls and shop, so she became an inquiry agent。 Hired by a man to prove his wife is cheating on him, Daisy enters employment as a maid in the woman's lover's house。 David Blackwood, known as Bishop, quickly comes to the conclusion that his new "maid" is actually there to expose him for his misdeeds。 Bishop can't let that happen; his affairs aren't actually affairs。 After watching his mother be abused by his father, Bishop helps wives who need to divorce to escape bad marriages。 However, when Bishop is accused of murdering the spouse of one of his "lovers", he turns to Daisy to help prove his innocence。 Can they get over their histories and secrets to be together, or will the past win and tear them apart? As stated earlier, this one was a slow start for me。 However, when Bishop is accused of murder, things really took off and flew by; and then I didn't want it to end! Both Bishop and Daisy were extremely likable characters。 Daisy's parent's died of opium overdoses, and she went to live with her unmarried Auntie Charlotte。 Daisy she resolved to become a successful inquiry agent, as the life of an aristocrat had no appeal to her。 She also wanted to help people。 When she began to work for Bishop, she quickly became attracted to him; but she was there to find proof of an affair, and she was determined to get her evidence! Bishop couldn't help but notice his attractive new maid, but he suspected she was a lot more than a servant。 Bishop absolutely hated his father, who horribly abused his mother and maybe even worse, so he was bound and determined to help woman in abusive marriages get a divorce; and since infidelity was grounds, he provided "proof"。 I loved when Daisy started to become jealous of Bishop's paramours。 In one case she dumped a bowl of chocolate sauce over the top of Bishop's head! Their attraction was really intense; once they got together you just knew there would be plenty of steam, and there was。 Then Bishop was suspected of murder, and he knew he needed someone he could trust to prove his innocence: Daisy。 That's when things really picked up speed and became unputdownable。 (Is that even a word?) We learned more about Bishop's past。 It was Daisy's actual past that came to light during their investigation that totally blew her world apart。 Nothing was as she had known。 Bishop was there for her。 But was he willing to give up his own crusade to save woman to be with Daisy? I think you know the answer to that! I truly loved these characters, and I can't wait to read Knight's book, which comes out next。I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley。 I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own。 。。。more

I’m pleased that the novel explores the unintended consequences of Bishop’s services and interrogates the savior complex while still being an enjoyable historical romance。I also liked the fact that it was more of a detective novel than a romance, but your mileage may vary。

FINAL DECISION: Because Daisy is a private investigator, there is a mystery here to solve。 Ultimately, there are some unexpected twists in the story that I enjoyed。 The plot here somewhat outweighs the romance, but I thought the relationship between Daisy and Bishop was fun。THE STORY: One of the Chessmen, Bishop, aka David Blackwood, is a notorious womanizer, having been named in various divorces as committing adultery with wives。 Daisy Townsend is a private investigator who has taken a position FINAL DECISION: Because Daisy is a private investigator, there is a mystery here to solve。 Ultimately, there are some unexpected twists in the story that I enjoyed。 The plot here somewhat outweighs the romance, but I thought the relationship between Daisy and Bishop was fun。THE STORY: One of the Chessmen, Bishop, aka David Blackwood, is a notorious womanizer, having been named in various divorces as committing adultery with wives。 Daisy Townsend is a private investigator who has taken a position in Bishop's house to confirm whether or not he is having an affair with her client's wife。 Bishop can't stop thinking about his new maid when he sees her。 The two seem to be playing a game, outsmarting and flirting simultaneously。 When Bishop becomes a suspect in a murder, Daisy has to help find the real murderer。OPINION: This book is more mystery heavy than I expected from a Lorraine Heath book。 (I think I could read a mystery series with Daisy and Bishop and be happy!) I thought the mystery was intriguing, and the twist in the story was unexpected but worked well in the context of this story。I also really liked the interactions between Daisy and Bishop。 There is clearly a real intellectual connection between the two, along with hot chemistry。 The scenes where the two are together are the best in the book。 The negative in this book is that the two need to be together more in the book。 Instead, there is much setup of the plot that the romance suffers somewhat。 There is a bit of instant-love in this book because the two don't have enough time together。But the moments the two are together are wonderful as they challenge one another as to what is happening in the plot and their individual hang-ups about relationships and marriage。 This book ends up being about making the decision to trust despite the evidence that things can go very wrong。Ultimately, this is a solid book that I liked because of the connection between Daisy and Bishop。 It wasn't as angst-filled as other Heath romances, and I missed that aspect, but it was enjoyable。WORTH MENTIONING: I loved the Easter eggs of characters that appear from prior Lorraine Heath books。CONNECTED BOOKS: THE COUNTERFEIT SCOUNDREL is the first book in The Chessmen: Masters of Seduction series。 However, the first Chessman is King, the hero of THE DUCHESS HUNT。 It is unnecessary to read that book first, but I recommend it because it introduces the group of men about which this series is about。STAR RATING: I give this book four stars。 。。。more

Bishop and Marguerite/Daisy have a little game of cat and mouse that was entertaining and intriguing as the drama of Bishop’s and Daisy’s pseudo-clients draws them together。 Bishop is immediately enthralled by Daisy and her unservant-like ways, and she finds his do-gooding surprising and contrary to his rakeish reputation。 I loved their banter and parrying of wits, and the side plots made the story even more fun to read。 This one was light on the steam but still strong on the romance。 Another so Bishop and Marguerite/Daisy have a little game of cat and mouse that was entertaining and intriguing as the drama of Bishop’s and Daisy’s pseudo-clients draws them together。 Bishop is immediately enthralled by Daisy and her unservant-like ways, and she finds his do-gooding surprising and contrary to his rakeish reputation。 I loved their banter and parrying of wits, and the side plots made the story even more fun to read。 This one was light on the steam but still strong on the romance。 Another solid, easy read and I’m looking forward to the next in this series。 。。。more

As an AI language model, I do not have subjective opinions regarding books。 However, here's a short summary of 'The Counterfeit Scoundrel' by Jessica Steele: The story follows the life of Lark, a struggling writer who is dealing with financial troubles。 In a desperate attempt to make money, she accepts a job from a wealthy businessman, Quinn O'Neill, who asks her to pretend to be his fiancée to appease his grandmother。 Lark agrees, but as she spends more time with Quinn, she starts to develop real feelings for him。 However, things turn complicated when Quinn's ex-girlfriend comes back into the picture, and Lark realizes that Quinn might not be the honest businessman he appeared to be。 Lark must decide whether to follow her heart or discover the truth about Quinn's motives。 Overall, 'The Counterfeit Scoundrel' is a light-hearted romance novel that explores the themes of deceit, trust, and love。
